Bavarian Lion: Der Bayerische Löwe

Those who have already been to Bavaria will certainly see (and if not, they will definitely pay attention next time) to the famous Bavarian lion, called Der Bayerische Löwe.

The lion is one of the official symbols of the Free State of Bavaria. The use of the lion in the local coat of arms begins its history from 1242, initially the symbol belonged to the Wittelsbach family, then began to be used as an official one.

If you look at the modern version of the coat of arms, you will see there 6 (!) Lions and one blue panther (which looks like a lion, but is not one). The Ministry of the Interior of Bavaria declares that the lions on the coat of arms are a continuation of the tradition begun in the 14th century. It consists of several parts: 4 small emblems for 7 governmental districts, two lions on both sides and a common small emblem (blue-white) in the middle. Historically, the lion symbolizes courage and generosity and is a very popular symbol of all kinds of families, castles and kings.

It is a symbolic animal for Bavaria to a greater extent than an eagle for the USA or a bear for Russia. In all cities of this region, lion sculptures are used in the design of old buildings, standing on iconic places or central squares. Statues of lions adorn the entrance to the Munich Residence, one of the main attractions of the city, another stone beast guards the entrance to the port of Lindau, etc.

You will often find lions in the names of cafes, beer brands and so on. Throughout the world, the lion is trying to add authenticity to everything that is called Bavarian.

Often you can meet, when the news “Bavarian lion” would call a football player FC Bavaria or a politician.
