How long do you need to learn German?

How long does it take to learn German? The answer to the question determines the achievement of the ultimate goal. People learn German for various reasons, but no one is willing to stretch their classes for years. Let’s try to objectively answer the question about the time of study. Immediately it is worth making a reservation: it all depends on the organization of time, the concentration of a particular student.
Real terms of language learning

If you learn German from scratch and want to master it to the level of minimal proficiency (A1 or A2), how much time you need. If you give training at least 120 hours / month (study daily for about 4 hours), you can complete the course in an average of 3 months. Naturally, not every student can work at such a pace (especially if there is a job, family affairs). Then the period of study should be multiplied by three: about 9 months you need to learn German from “zero” to the basic level.

How much time a day should be given to the German language? A good rate is considered to be 3 full-fledged lessons with a teacher per week, and another 1-2 hours of independent study daily. The formula is simple: the less time you can devote to German every day, the longer you will have to master it.

We found out how much time to learn German: about 9 months at a low pace of study to reach the first level. Practice shows that in less time a language cannot be learned. The exceptions are cases when the student already speaks the language, but needs an intensive course to deepen knowledge (expansion of vocabulary, immersion in topics, etc.).
“German for a month” – is it real?

Everywhere you can see ads that guarantee the acquisition of language knowledge in an unrealistically short time. How long does it take to learn German using “unique authoring programs”? Objectively speaking, there are no such programs: there are only regular attempts to create them. It all started since the 70s of the last century, when one of the European companies produced audio tapes guaranteeing the study of German for 60 hours. The effect of such “education” was zero.
How many German words to learn per week?

Answering how much time a day should be given to the German language, one should touch upon the expansion of lexical reserves. If we talk about real possibilities, then a person needs to memorize on average 50 new difficult words a week. It is better to break them down into subjects, and the words themselves should be taught in the context of sentences, sample phrases.

If the goal of your training is to read German written sources, the number of words studied should be increased to 150-200 per week. Replenishment of vocabulary implies not only mechanical learning, but also an understanding of the composition of each word, the ability to correctly write it down, use it in a sentence.
How long to learn German?

How long does it take to learn German? It is necessary to initially understand what result you want, for what period and how you are going to evaluate it. For example, you need to reach level C1 before the start of the school year by obtaining a DAF certificate. Give this information to the teacher, he will make a personal plan and will tell you how much time you need to devote to classes daily, every week, month.

There are six language levels in total – and the higher the complexity, the more time is needed for learning:

A1. Understanding of simple phrases and the ability to keep the conversation simple within the framework of the topics studied.
A2. Understanding of words and simple sentences in the framework of the topics studied, conducting conversations on everyday topics.
IN 1. Available topics: work, leisure, study. Understanding quite complex messages, the ability to formulate answers.
AT 2. The ability to work with highly specialized topics, a fairly good spontaneous conversational speech, the ability to argue.
C1. Understanding of complex information on a variety of topics. Fluent speech. The ability to speak is reasoned and difficult.
C2. Understanding of any oral and written sources, accurate rich speech with underlining shades of meanings.

How much time to learn a language depends on your basic level, the number of hours per week that you can devote to studying, and motivation. The involvement of an experienced teacher means a lot: he will be able to achieve intensive development, so that you really see an increase in results and want to achieve more.
