Prepositions in German “wann?” And “wie lange?”

Now we are talking about prepositions of time.
Time prepositions answer the questions: “when?” (“Wann?”) And “how long?” (“Wie lange?”)

Prepositions that answer the question “when?” (“Wann?”):

“Um” is used to mean:

The exact time of day: “um 12:00 Uhr” – “at 12 o’clock”, “um Mitternacht” – “at midnight”.

“In / im = in + dem (Dativ)” is used to mean:

Seasons: “im Sommer” – “summer”;
Year: “im Jahre 2018” – “in 2018” (can be used without a preposition and the word “Jahr”);
Months: “im Januar” – “in January”;
Used in the sense of “through”: “in 2 Wochen” – “after 2 weeks”.

“An / am = an + dem (+ Dativ)” is used to denote:

Days of the week: “am Montag” – “on Monday”, “am Wochenende” – at the weekend;
Approximate time of day: “am Morgen” – “in the morning”, “am Nachmittag” – “in the afternoon”, but (!) “In der Nacht” – “at night”;
Dat: “am 27.07”.

“Vor”: “vor 3 Tagen” – “three days ago” (not to be confused with the English “for”: “for three days” – “for three days”). It is also used in the meaning of “before”: “vor unserem Gespräch” – “before our conversation”.

“Nach” – “after”: “nach unserem Gespräch” – “after our conversation”.

Now let’s move on to the second group. Prepositions that denote a length of time and answer the question “how long?” (“Wie lange?”):

“Bis” – “before”: “Ich bleibe hier bis Montag” – “I stay here until Monday”.

“Ab” – “with”. Indicates the beginning of the time period: “ab Morgen fängt ein Studium an” – “study starts on Monday”.

“Zwischen” – “between”: “wir sind zwischen 12:00 und 18:00 geöffnet” – “we are open between 12:00 and 18:00”.

“Seit” refers to a point in the past that started something that is still in progress. “Seit vier Jahren wohne ich im Bangladesh” – “I have been living in Bangladesh for 4 years now” (you can only say that you still live there). If you don’t live there, then you should say: “ich habe 4 Jahre im Bangladesh gewohnt” – “I lived for 4 years in Bangladesh”.

“Von … bis” – “from … to”: “von Freitag bis Montag mache ich eine Party” – “from Friday to Monday I have a party” (this is if we do not need articles). If we need articles as for dates, then we use “vom … bis zum”: “vom 07.12 bis zum 24.12 arbeite ich” – “from 07.12 to 24.12 I work.”
